Who created evil?
A university professor asked his students: “Did God create everything?” One of the students answered: “Yes He did!”
The teacher then said, “If God created everything, He created evil since evil exists. And according to the principle that our work defines who we are, then God is evil.” The teacher was proud to have tricked his students. One pupil asked, “Teacher, may I ask you a question?” - “Certainly,” replied the teacher. And then a discussion followed.
- “Sir, does cold exist?”
- “Of course, it does! Have you never been cold?”
- “In fact, sir, it does not exist. According to the laws of physics, what we
consider 'cold' really is the absence of heat. Absolute zero (-460o F) is the total absence of heat. Cold does not exist. We have invented this word to describe the absence of heat.” - The student continued, “Professor, does darkness exist?”
- “Well of course darkness exists!”
- “Once again you are mistaken, sir. Darkness does not exist either. Darkness is total absence of light. We can measure light but not darkness. Darkness is a term to describe the absence of light.”
- Finally the student asked, “Sir, does evil exist?”
- The teacher, now unsure, replied, “Of course! Countless crimes are committed all over the world each day. It is nothing else than evil.”
- The student replied, “Sir, evil does not exist. It is simply the absence of God. Just like cold and darkness, it is a word that men have invented to describe the absence of God.”
- “God did not create evil. It is like cold that is present when there is no heat, or darkness when there is not light.”
The teacher sat down. The young man‟s name was Albert Einstein.
