Our Amazing Race

One of the more popular “reality” shows on television these days is called, “The AMAZING RACE”. This program has several teams of 2 players racing around the world meeting various challenges in order to earn clues that will direct them to their final destination. The first team to reach the end wins one million dollars.
What is amazing about this race is the extent to which the teams will go in order to finish first. Challenges have included jumping off of buildings, eating 5 lbs of sausage, and finding their way out of foreign cities without guides. No matter what the obstacle, each team shows a fierce determination to overcome every obstacle in order to win the prize.

The similarity between this contest and our own situation here in Verdun struck me as I began to list all of the things that needed to be done in order to move our congregation into the new building on Monk Avenue. It seems that each day brings new challenges as the “to-do” list for permits, new financing, architectural plans, moving details, lawyers, inspectors, etc., continues to grow and the need to maintain our day to day ministry remains. We used to be a stable church at home here in Verdun for the last 20 years, but we will soon become a church that has its own race to run with money challenges to face before we reach our final destination.

I am writing this in order to prepare us for what is to come in the next few months. A move is exciting but can also be demanding as we will have to endure inconvenience, changes to our routines, greater service and giving, and the sadness of leaving a place that holds so many wonderful memories for us all.
This will be our amazing race however if we remember that it is the Lord who is truly amazing and under His leadership we will all arrive at the final destination safely.
