Vulnerable

As I write this, it’s only Tuesday, and so far it has not been a good week for my computers. The office computer is non-operational, and my back-up laptop seems to have contracted a virus. I’m clueless as to where the virus came from, but I’m willing to wager that the infection came as a result of my lack of virus protection software, thus leaving me vulnerable to an attack from essentially every “virtual” side.

Such is the nature of attacks, though: they seek vulnerability. It applies as much to our spiritual lives just as it does to computers. Sin often exposes our vulnerabilities – areas where we have weakness or difficulty of control. Myself, I’m vulnerable to making judgments about people, to potato chips, and to procrastination. The correlation between sin and our vulnerabilities is no coincidence, however. Ephesians 6:11 indicates that we are the object of the devil’s schemes. That’s right: Satan schemes against each one of us. Our vulnerabilities are the objects of individual calculations, and we are the objects of spiritual assassination. The question, then, is, “What can we do?”

Perhaps first, we must be willing to identify and admit to having vulnerabilities. It is counter-productive to believe that we have control over something we don’t. Write these areas down for yourself on a piece of paper. Then, secondly, seek God to have him cover, protect and heal each area. Seek him by putting on his armour (Ephesians 6:10-20). James 4:8 says, “Come near to God and he will come near to you.” Verse 10 says, “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.” And seek him in prayer (5:16)!

So, are you seeking protection for your vulnerabilities? Then make yourself vulnerable to God, and try his protection plan.
